Natural Sun Safety

Summer in Oz is here and to us it means only one thing... Water! Whether it's the beach or a river, we try and get in the water whenever we can. The Australian sun is harsh and strong, so whilst we don't mind getting out and about in the mornings and evening without sun protection (read about the benefits here), we do need to be mindful about protecting our skin during the middle of the day. Its really important to be mindful of the products you use to protect against UV rays as many products contain chemicals that actually cause more danger than benefits (find out more here) so after trialling a few different products over the years, we reckon we've gotten our sun safety down pat. Here's what we do to protect ourselves and our kids;

1. A good long-sleeved rash shirt

By wearing a quality, long-sleeved rash shirt you are blocking the UV rays without needing sunscreen, a total win-win. We don't use a particular brand, just whatever is good quality and cute!

2. Natural Zinc

For our faces and necks (or anywhere else a rash shirt doesn't cover) we use a natural non-nano zinc (that is the zinc particles won't enter the bloodstream through your skin). We have been using Sun & Earth natural zinc and find it easy to apply, lasts for hours and we've never been burnt after applying it.

3. A brimmed hat

Hats are a no-brainer when it comes to sun safety, so we always make sure we have a wide-brimmed hat for every member of our family.

4. A good quality beach umbrella

Ok so technically lots of people use those shade shelters, but I'm just put it out there that they just aren't for me. I like pretty things! So i was stoked to finally find an adorable beach umbrella that has a safety strap to help keep it sturdy when the winds blows in. The Cocopani brand of beach umbrellas have UPF50+ sun rating and come with a Cocosac which is a bag you fill with sand and attach to your umbrella to keep it in place... Genius! we absolutely love our Cocopani umbrella

5. Non-nano, chemical free sunscreen

There are times when we are out and about in the sun and need just a general, all-purpose sunscreen. We have tried a few in the past but are currently using Little Innoscents Natural Sun Lotion are really happy with it.

There are probably many more products you can buy to protect yourself and your family from the sun, but we love these ones because they are quick and easy to use and do the job perfectly. Now, let's get to the beach!
